About the Memorial

“Morning Call” by Roberto Julio Bessin (2011)

A bronze sculpture weighing almost 5,200 pounds, Jean Cochran Park’s large osprey sits on top of a recovered steel I-beam from the 33rd floor of the World Trade Center’s North Tower. After being gifted the beam for their help in the clean up of Ground Zero after the attacks, James Miller of Miller environmental had commissioned the Roberto Bessin to create the famous osprey that resides on top to represent Long Island’s involvement in this tragic event.

The sculpture was eventually listed to the Village of Greenport by Mr. Miller in 2002, then was moved to its current location of Peconic in 2011 for the 10th anniversary of the attacks on September 11th. Subsequently, the Southold Town Fire Chief’s Council had built a fireman’s memorial at its base to commemorate all Southold Town volunteers who had died in the line of duty.
